India Announces $450 Million Reconstruction Aid for Sri Lanka After Cyclone Ditwah

India has announced a $450 million aid package to support Sri Lanka’s relief and reconstruction efforts following the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The announcement was made in Colombo after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and conveyed a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India has stepped forward with a major financial commitment to support Sri Lanka’s recovery from the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, announcing a $450 million assistance package aimed at relief, rehabilitation, and long-term reconstruction efforts. The decision underscores New Delhi’s expanding role as a regional first responder during humanitarian crises in South Asia.

The announcement was made in Colombo during high-level diplomatic engagements, where India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During the meeting, Jaishankar formally handed over a letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveying India’s solidarity with the Sri Lankan people and its readiness to support the island nation’s recovery process following the cyclone’s impact.

Details of the assistance package were later shared at a joint press conference with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Vijitha Herath. Officials confirmed that the $450 million support would be directed toward addressing immediate damage and facilitating reconstruction in areas affected by Cyclone Ditwah, which caused widespread destruction to infrastructure and livelihoods.

Indian officials emphasized that the assistance reflects India’s commitment to standing by Sri Lanka during times of crisis, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters that strain national resources and recovery mechanisms. The package is expected to bolster ongoing relief operations while laying the groundwork for rebuilding critical infrastructure and restoring normalcy in affected regions.

The move is also seen as a reaffirmation of close bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka, with humanitarian cooperation remaining a central pillar of their relationship. As Sri Lanka continues to assess the full extent of the cyclone’s damage, India’s financial support is likely to play a key role in accelerating recovery efforts and strengthening regional cooperation in disaster response.
